Japanese Language School registration begins June 12 | News, Sports, Jobs

Registration for the Wailuku Hongwanji Gakuen (Japanese Language School) will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on June 12, at the Wailuku Hongwanji Mission.

The school, which begins on Aug. 8, is open to students in grades K-8 and teaches writing, reading, speaking and folk songs.

Classes are 30 minutes long and start at 3 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, and at 2 p.m. on Wednesdays.

Teachers are originally from Japan and will teach students with standard Japanese language. Students ages 9 and above who are learning Japanese for the first time will have a special class called “Wing 1” and will learn two levels within one year.

The registration fee is $54 per student. Tuition is $85 per student for a member’s child and $90 for a nonmember’s child. Textbooks and other learning materials may be purchased at the time of registration.

Bus services are available for students from Kahului, Wailuku, Waihee, Lihikai, Pomaikai and Puu Kukui elementaries. The Wailuku Hongwanji Mission is located at 1828 Vineyard St. in Wailuku.
