Problem in US is huge distrust of media | News, Sports, Jobs

The article entitled “Distrust in America” on the front page of The Maui News (April 21) misses the real problem in America in that we have a huge distrust of our media.

A clear example is the characterization of the George Zimmerman/Trayvon Martin incident that Zimmerman murdered Martin only because he was suspicious, rather than the court-proven truth that Martin violently attacked Zimmerman, who then used his firearm to save his life.

It was also pointed out that there are few statistics that support the article’s thesis that Blacks are routinely shot by fearful whites in innocent encounters. But this ignores the massive level of statistics that show that people of color (mostly Blacks) are the perpetrators in crime at more than double their proportion of the population.

Also, what is the predominant skin color of the 2021 BLM rioters, the looters, the most recent rampage of teenagers in downtown Chicago? Honest Blacks bemoan the problem and recognize that there’s more Black-on-Black crime than Black-on-white or white-on-Black.

I’m a person that believes that we all come from the same human ancestors and have the same blood. Science proves this.

But I’m very concerned when I see articles like this trying to foment racial tensions using falsehoods and other misinformation.

I don’t condone people using their guns irresponsibly or with racist intent. But let’s be realistic when we accuse people of unjustified fear. Facts provide a reasonable paradigm of suspicion.
