Young Dolph was an American rapper and CEO of Paper Route Empire. He was known for such projects as King of Memphis, Rich Crack Baby, and Rich Slave. Young Dolph was born Adolph Robert Thornton Jr. on July 27, 1985, in Chicago, Illinois. He had four siblings. The family moved to Memphis, Tennessee, when he was about 2 years old. He was raised by his grandmother in the Castalia Heights area of South Memphis.
CAREER
Young Dolph made his debut on the music scene with his Paper Route Campaign (2008) mixtape. It was independently released by his own label, Paper Route Empire. A series of mixtapes followed including Welcome 2 Dolph World (2010), High Class Street Music (2011), and A Time 2 Kill (2012). Young Dolph would later collaborate with rappers like 2 Chainz, Rick Ross and Young Jeezy. He was featured on O.T. Genasis’ 2015 single “Cut It”. The song sold over a million copies and was certified Platinum by the RIAA.
Young Dolph’s debut studio album, King Of Memphis, was released in February 2016. It peaked at #5 on the Top Rap Album chart and #9 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop chart. The album saw production from Zaytoven, Mike WiLL Made It, and a few others. Dolph was featured on Gucci Mane‘s single “Bling Blaww Burr” from the album Woptober (2016). His next mixtape, Gelato, was released in February 2017. It features guest artists Wiz Khalifa, Lil Yachty and the group Migos. Dolph released a second album, Bulletproof, in April 2017. He collaborated with San Francisco rapper Berner on ‘Tracking Numbers EP’ in August 2017.
In September 2018, Dolph released his next album, Role Model, via Paper Route. His joint project, Dum and Dummer, with Key Glock arrived in July 2019. It was supported by the singles “Baby Joker” and “Ill.” Dolph’s 5th full-length album, Rich Slave, was released in August 2020. It was led by the Megan Thee Stallion-assisted single “RNB.” The second installment of his ‘Dum and Dummer’ project dropped in March 2021. It rose to #4 on the Top Rap Albums chart.
PERSONAL
Young Dolph died on November 17, 2021, at the age of 36. He was fatally shot and killed by two unidentified gunmen at Makeda’s Homemade Butter Cookies bakery in Memphis, Tennessee. He is survived by his partner, Mia Jaye, and their two children Tre Tre and Aria Ella Thornton. Dolph was 6ft 3in tall and he was of African-American descent. His wealth was estimated at $3 million prior to his death.
In 2017, Young Dolph was involved in a shooting in Charlotte, North Carolina. His bullet-proof SUV was reportedly shot multiple times on the night of February 25, 2017. This was during the 2017 CIAA Weekend. On September 26, 2017, Dolph was shot multiple times outside Shoe Palace in Hollywood, Los Angeles. He sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Rapper Yo Gotti was named as a person of interest but was later cleared.
