Hope Solo is an American soccer star and one of the top female goalkeepers in the world. She boasts two Olympic gold medals and a World Cup championship. Solo was born to parents Judy and Jeffrey on July 30, 1981, in Richland, Washington. She has two siblings, Marcus and Teresa. Solo attended Richland High School, where she played forward on the school’s soccer team. She continued her education and soccer career at the University of Washington. She graduated in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in Speech Communications.
CAREER
Solo was a lead goal scorer and two-time All-American during high school. She switched to goalkeeping in 1999 with the Washington Huskies. Solo dominated the Pac-10 Conference at her new position. She won three consecutive NSCAA All-American honors and the Hermann Trophy during her senior year.
Solo made her debut with the US women’s national soccer team in 2000. She’s since competed in the Women’s United Soccer Association, the Women’s Professional Soccer, and the W-League. She also played for the Seattle Reign in the National Women’s Soccer League. Solo made her Olympic debut at the 2008 Games in Beijing. Team USA defeated Brazil 1-0 to win gold. Solo won her second Olympic gold medal at the 2012 Games in London. She won her first FIFA Women’s World Cup title in 2015 against Japan. In August 2016, Solo was handed a six months suspension by US Soccer. The decision came two weeks after she called the Swedish soccer team “a bunch of cowards”.
Outside of soccer, Solo was a contestant on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars in 2011. She was partnered with Ukrainian born dance choreographer, Maksim Chmerkovskiy. The two were eliminated during the semifinals. Solo’s autobiography ‘A Memoir of Hope’ was published in 2012.
